Class music making – new music lessons at schools

'Music moves' was the motto under which the Musikmesse and the German Music Council (Deutsche Musikrat) promoted the teaching of music last year. All participants agreed that all schools in Germany should benefit form regular music lessons.

Analyses made by the Federal Association of German Musical Instrument Manufacturers (Bundesverband der Deutschen Musikinstrumenten-Hersteller e. V. - BDMH) and the Federation of German Music Dealers (Gesamtverband Deutscher Musikfachgeschäfte – GDM), revealed a spectacular decline in music lessons at general schools. Founded in 1987, the Academy for Music Teaching (Akademie für Musikpädagogik – AfMP) aims to counteract this trend. Music teachers were commissioned with the development of new forms of music teaching and, with the financial and administrative support of the BDMH and the GDM, this quickly led to the development of the class music-making programme with string, brass and percussion instruments, which is successfully practiced today.

New class music-making programme a success
The class music-making programme was compiled by music teachers for music teachers and not subject to economic influences or interests during the development phase. The sponsors of the programme firmly believe that the music market can only be stabilised and expanded in the medium term via high-grade music teaching at schools, which includes the cooperation of music schools and music societies. This enables all students – not just those who, encouraged by their parents, are familiarising themselves with music in music schools – to find out about musical instruments and, ideally, to learn to play one during regular music lessons.

Teacher training the basic prerequisite
The Academy for Music Teaching run by the BDMH and GDM offers nationwide courses of basic and advanced training for music teachers at general schools and music schools, as well as for musicians, instructors and conductors in music societies.
Greater emphasis has been given to university courses for music teachers since 2002. Thus, numerous lecturers of the Academy for Music Teaching have taught at a variety of universities and music academies including:

  • Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz
  • Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität, Frankfurt
  • Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-Universität, Würzburg
  • Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Munich
  • Universität Regensburg
  • Universität Bayreuth
  • Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nuremberg

Investments in the future
Numerous members of the Federal Association of German Musical Instrument Manufacturers and the Federation of German Music Dealers have volunteered to supply schools at special terms and conditions. The Sponsoring Society of German Musical Instrument Manufacturers (Förder-gesellschaft der deutschen Musikinstrumenten-Hersteller), which belongs to the Federal Association, supplies instruments at special prices and also offers financial aid so that music teachers have less trouble procuring the necessary instruments. This project enjoys the support of numerous companies from the music retail trade, which help with deliveries and after-sales service. Thus, the instruments are supplied in a coordinated way and the schools see the industry and trade not just as instrument manufacturers and dealers but also, and in particular, as partners and supporters in the interests of an attractive, common goal.
