The speech in honour of Paquito D’Rivera will be given by music collector Detlef Schneider, a friend of the prize-winner. D’Rivera began his career early in life and was seen as a musical child prodigy in Cuba. He made his debut at the National Theatre of Havana when he was ten. At the age of twelve, he studied clarinet and saxophone at Havana Conservatory. While still in Havana, he founded the 'Orquestra Cubana de Musica Moderna' and played in the 'Cuban National Symphony Orchestra'. In 1967, he joined forces with pianist Chucho Valdez to found the internationally successful 'IRAKERE' band that combined Cuban folk music with rock and jazz and for which D’Rivera played not only alt, soprano and baritone saxophone but also the flute. In 1980, D’Rivera emigrated to the USA where he played, inter alia, with Dizzy Gillespie and took over leader¬ship of the 'United Nations Orchestra' following Gillespie's death. Since launching his career, Paquito D’Rivera has made a large number of records. His discography includes over 30 albums as a solo artist in the fields of jazz, bebop and Latin jazz. He tours worldwide with his various ensembles: the 'Chamber Jazz Ensemble', the 'Paquito D’Rivera Big Band' and the 'Paquito D’Rivera Quintet'. Besides his work in the jazz field, Paquito D’Rivera has also written and interpreted a large number of classical works in the course of his career. He has played in a variety of formations and composed works – from solo pieces to a symphony. His collaborations include solo appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and the Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of his career is undoubtedly the recording of his three chamber-music works by the internationally famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma in New York's Carnegie Hall in 2003. Paquito D’Rivera is one of the leading representatives of Latin American music. He has received numerous Grammy Awards and nominations for his recordings and his compositions have been singled out for praise by many musical institutions. The honours bestowed on him include a Fellowship Award for Music Composition of John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Living Jazz Legend Award of the Kennedy Center and the National Medal of Arts by the White House. He has also been given an honorary doctorate of the internationally renowned Berklee School of Music, Boston.
